Our first grade artists recently completed still life paintings of flowers in a vase. The children learned about the famous artists and got to look at still life paintings by Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. To create our own masterpieces, the students cut out symmetrical vases. Then they used the Elements of Art line and shape, to decorate their vases. Upon completion, students then used their artistic talents to paint beautiful colorful flowers.
Notes from the art roomI'm excited to share with you three of our kindergarten friends that recently completed their pear still life paintings. The children learned how to draw a pear using the Elements of Art shape, line, and color. First they started with a circle, then they added a curved line to form a hill to complete the pears. We also talked about foreground, middleground, and background as well as overlapping. This was our first time using paint and mixing watercolors.
Art room notesNotes from Mr. Granucci, in the Art Room
We are off to a fantastic start this the year in the art room. I will be teaching at Haddam Elementary School Wednesday afternoons, all day Thursday and Friday’s this year. If you ever have a question, I can be reached at jgranucci@rsd17.org. Our kindergarten students recently completed their first two projects, a self-portrait which were amazing, and a still life watercolor painting of pears where student experimented with blending colors. In first grade, students had the challenge of giving the Mona Lisa a makeover. Rainbow colored hair, fancy hats, brightly colored dresses, and beautifully designed jewelry were just some of the details added to make Mona look like she was a queen for the day! In second grade, the children had a challenge of redesigning Picasso’s Girl with a Ponytail into a cubist style picture. Warm and cool colors were used to color their portraits into striking finished works of art. Our third grade students used the elements of line and shape to create caricatures with crazy hair. I was quite impressed with the amazing effort and details they put into this portrait lesson. Lastly, our fourth grade students at HES had the task of practicing their shading skills drawing realistic portraits of our new principal Mrs. Whidden. They even designed a new dress with geometric designs and added jewelry accents. In addition, students did their best to guess some of Mrs. Whidden’s likes and dislikes. Stop into the cafeteria next time you are at HES and see these amazing portraits and read all about our new principal. At BES, our fourth grade students has the task of designing an abstract portrait using the elements of line and shape that the third grade used for all their details. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade always learn about famous artists too, and how artists interpret the same subject differently. In the coming weeks the children will be learning about what is a still life and how artists also use different techniques and styles to create their pictures. For our new kindergarten parents, don’t be alarmed if you don’t see any of the art projects are coming home. I save most projects each student does all year for our annual art show. We are always looking for volunteers to help out in the art room, specifically the art show. If you are interested, send me an email indicating the best days of the week and times. Be sure to check my weekly blog @ www.rsd17.org. You will need to click on the globe next to my name in the staff directory to get all the latest information and pictures of some of our talented artist’s projects going on in the art room. Please start to save recycled supplies for the art room for our sculpture unit. If you have something unique that you regularly buy, that’s not on the list and you think we could use in the art room, please send me an email if you aren’t sure if we could use it. Space is limited for storage, so it would really be best to check first. Be sure to make sure all recycled supplies are washed out before sending to school.
Welcome to the art room for the 2017-2018 school year! We have already been very busy in the art room creating some amazing masterpieces all centered around the theme "Portraits". One of our goals for each grade level has been to learn about facial proportions, and how to draw them realistically, with the exception of third grade. In grade three, we have been working on caricatures and incorporating the elements of art, line and shape. The following is a small sampling of some of the recently completed works of art. Next time you are in school, check our art bulletin boards to see these detailed crazy hair portraits.
