spot light on kindergarten

Our kindergarten students are making great progress with learning how to draw self portraits. I'm so impressed with what they have accomplished already this year. I had the students first draw a portrait of themselves without any teacher guidance as a formative starting point. It was interesting to see the primitive drawings of themselves. The following week I started the lesson on how artists should draw portraits. We went over such things as facial proportions as well as introducing the elements of design for shape and line. Below are just a few examples of their efforts. I think you'll agree that they are wonderful. Have a great weekend!

Our first grade students have been putting their finishing touches on their portraits of Mona Lisa. The purpose of the lesson was to teach the children how artists draw portraits showing realism. The children were given the challenge of if they could give the Mona Lisa a makeover, what changes would they make? I really think the children had fun using their imaginations to complete these portraits.

The children were also introduced to the next artist we will be learning about, Vincent Van Gogh. I read them the storyCamille and the Sunflowers  by: Lawrence Anholt. If you follow the link below, you can hear the story I read to the children.

Welcome to a new year in art!

I hope everyone had a great summer. It feels so good to be back into a routine and to see all the children rested as well as ready for some great learning this year. All the students have met with me at least once, except for my Monday classes at Burr. We have been reviewing what good behavior and effort should look like when in art class. In addition, all the classes have started a portrait of some sort depending on the grade. If you are a kindergarten parent or new to our school, please don't worry that you aren't seeing any projects coming home. I usually save just about every project for our annual art show in May. Check back here often, because I usually try to post to this blog at least once a week with the latest happenings as well as pictures. If you ever need to get in touch with me or have a question, you can call me at either school and leave a message or just email me at [email protected] (Burr 860-345-4584 M T  HES 860-345-4551 W Th F)
