Notes from Mr. Granucci, in the Art Room - Haddam Elementary

Congratulations to Amelia Petersen for being selected as this year’s recipient of the Connecticut Association of Schools Celebration of the Arts award, which is given to an outstanding fourth grade student in the area of visual arts. Amelia will be honored in February, at the Aqua Turf in Southington. Congratulations!

Students have already started to work on this year’s theme for the art show which will be “The Farm”. They will be learning to draw and paint a variety of animals, creating sculptures from recycled supplies and using clay as well.

We have been gearing up for our annual art show. Please continue to save recycled supplies for the art room for our sculpture unit. If you have something unique that you regularly buy, that’s not on the list and you think we could use in the art room, please send me an email. jgranucci@rsd17.org Space is limited for storage, so it would be best to check first. Be sure to make sure all recycled supplies are washed out before sending to school. J

Spotlight on grade two

Students in Mrs. Drejer's second grade class have been busy for the last few weeks creating landscapes using oil pastels and watercolors in the style of Post Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh. They used different blends of oil pastels to create dabs or blotches of color within their landscape illustrating the impressionist technique. Once completed, a watercolor wash was used similar to a water color resist for the foreground, middleground and background. A few of the students are also working on their Paul Cezanne apple still life's with patterns of line for the background. Students worked on the technique of blending and mixing colors for this lesson. Be sure to check these beautiful works of art out hanging in the hallways the next time you visit HES.

Spotlight on grade four

Students in Mr. Snow's class recently completed individual self portraits, which then was turned into a group project mural of the yellow submarine. Eveyone had the challenge of using a portrait mirror to first sketch themselves. Then the students had the challenge of shading and blending values to get highlights and shaddows to make their faces look realistic and three dimensional. I was so impressed with how well they did on this project. I think you will agree!
