Notes from Mr. Granucci, in the Art Room
We are off to a fantastic start this the year in the art room. I will be teaching at Haddam Elementary School Wednesday afternoons, all day Thursday and Fridays this year.
Our kindergarten students have been working on self-portraits for our first project. Students spent the first art period looking at portrait paintings by famous artists, then drawing their own self-portraits independently. This was followed by a second more directed art lesson on how artists draw eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Each student added their own special details to make their portraits resemble themselves. For our new kindergarten parents, don’t be alarmed if you don’t see any of the art projects coming home. I save every project for each student and you will see them all displayed at our annual art show in May.
The first grade created some wonderful flower bouquet paintings using watercolor, tempera paint and oil pastels. We also incorporated a bit of symmetry and created some cool patterns using the elements of line and shape for the vases.
The second grade students just finished creating an apple still life similar to the style of the famous artist Paul Cezanne. We are learning how artists use the element of art “value” to blend colors to show shading and highlights, as well as giving their pictures a three dimensional feel. In addition, we are using the elements of line and shape to create patterns for their paintings.
Our third grade students have been learning about perspective by drawing a still life within a room to illustrate a three-dimensional look. The artist we are studying is Henri Matisse. We will be incorporating the elements of line and shape to illustrate patterns. Students will be using oil pastels and water colors to complete their pictures.
The fourth grade created still life pictures for their first project also. Students created realistic fruit bowls using oil pastels by overlapping a variety of fruit with in a symmetrically drawn pedestal bowl. One of the goals of the lesson was to show shading techniques by blending colors using oil pastels. I am in the process of hanging these pictures throughout the building. Be sure to stop and take a look when you visit the school next time.
